The Move

Hello all, I’m back.

It’s time for the second installment of “A Look Into Andrew Glaser’s Life”.  Yeah, I think I’ll keep using that, makes it sound like a movie or like it’s important (It is isn’t it?!).  It’s been almost ten days since I last wrote and it’s been a pretty eventful ten days if you ask me. Everything from the Super Bowl to moving buildings.  Well, let’s get into it.

We’ll start with the Super Bowl, and what really is there to say about it… Boring is really the only word I can conjure up to accurately describe Super Bowl XLVIII.  It’s as if the Bronco’s forgot how to play football right before the biggest game of their lives.  My career football stats may have qualified to start for the Broncos that night (one half tackle in seventh grade, impressive..I know).  Not to say that anything should be taken away from the legacy of Peyton Manning because he is still a legendary quarterback and his skill/statistics are undeniable, but it in no way has helped build that legacy.  But as they have always said, defense wins championships and the Seahawks made sure they lived up to that statement.  The commercials did not really stand out either, but I tend to be a tough critic when it comes to commercials, why? I’m not exactly sure but I typically find one or two significantly good.  Oh well, either way, congratulations Seahawks.  Just be happy you didn’t have to face the Steelers again. 😉

Later in the week I moved into a new dorm and there are a couple different reasons for this, but the distance was the deciding factor.  The dorm I was in before was in Building F, which happens to be the building farthest from my classes and everywhere else I need to be daily.  So I made the decision to switch to Building E which is directly next to the dining hall and where all my classes are.  The room I moved to is a huge upgrade from what I had and I am loving it.  When I first moved in the place was quite a mess..The floors were dirty, the shower was quite bad, and there was no order really.  Well, my roommate said I could do whatever I want with the place so I went ahead and did a full clean of the place and did some rearranging (Mom would be proud, don’t expect that to be the case at home…:)) Here are some picture so you get the idea.

This here is my kitchen which is quite big for a dorm room, if only I had a stove! But either way I am definitely not complaining because it is great.

Image

I was completely unaware my room had this but I do have a living room between mine and my roommates rooms.  This is great because I can have people over and even have friends from back home come up and stay here. It’s a bit of a mess right now but that will be changing soon!

Image

And this here is where I dwell.  And yes, my bed is on the floor but I had to settle for that because the bed that was given to me was very fragile and I didn’t want to risk waking up to my bed collapsing.  Either way it’s just as comfortable on the floor and it’s ideal for coming back and just crashing right into bed.  It looks pretty bland right now but don’t worry, the Pittsburgh pride will be shown on the walls in no time.

Image

Going from a simple double studio, to this for just a small amount more a semester was a great decision and I’m going to make the best of it.  There is also a sink area and a bathroom but it’s nothing exciting so I didn’t feel a picture was necessary, you get the idea!  My previous room was one room shared by two people and a bathroom so it’s a really nice upgrade.  My new roommate goes by Darrel and he’s a pretty cool guy.  He is from Penn Hills which is right next to where I live and most of my good friends are from there as well.  I can tell it’s going to be a good semester living here.

Over this past weekend we had our first couple Volleyball games of the 2014 season and the result was not at all what we were looking for.  We lost to IUP who we beat in every tournament match up in the Fall, and we lost to Alderson Bradice(?), a team from West Virginia. The only win we got over the weekend was against Allegheny.  So all in all, it was not a good start at all.  But we aren’t going to let it bring us down, we just have to start practicing harder.  It’s been harder for us to practice efficiently due to the fact that we only have ten guys and we can’t scrimmage 6v6 which has taken a toll on our progress.  Hopefully we can find a couple guys to fill in within the next couple weeks.

I realize this blog is somewhat turning into a picture blog combined with what I have to say about it, but hey, that just makes it more interesting right?? Well, maybe just for you right brained people but oh well.  So far all two of my blogs have been in this format but don’t worry, soon I’ll be blogging about specific subjects, not just my life.  These blogs may include my feelings, opinions, or emotions.  So be prepared for a journey into the mind of  a genius..  If you didn’t read that as sarcasm, it was. Or was it… MAYBE, but that’s up to you.

Anyways, I’ll leave you with some random photos from the last ten days.

Here I am sneaking into the Greek Life picture for the newspaper.  No I am not involved in Greek Life and have no plans to ever be, but I can still be in the picture..right?

Image

And this is what I do on Friday nights, lay on the floor in North Hall haha.  But don’t worry, we have just as much fun as anyone else, and I’ve met a lot of cool people in  North Hall.  It’s the place to be if you ask me.  This is my friend Sarah and this is only one picture of a series.  But this is the only one that we look somewhat normal.  I shall spare you from the rest of the pictures, for now..

Also, it has been a tundra here at Slippery Rock and the snow never goes away because it’s always freezing.  This picture is from a couple days ago and it continues to get worse haha, but that’s the risk you take at SRU (Snow and Rain University).  The building in the background is where I currently live.

Image

But anyways, if you read this far again I appreciate it and hope I could keep you entertained.  That’s all for this weeks installment of “A Look Into Andrew Glaser’s Life”, tune in next week/ten days/month for the next installment.  It all depends on how interesting my life is!

Thanks for reading,

Andrew Glaser

The Return, Once Again

Yeah yeah I know, I’m not very faithful to my blog.   I come and I go but hopefully I’m here to stay this time around.  Well where should I start…so much has changed since the last time I updated this blog.  I transferred from CCAC to Slippery Rock University starting in the fall and I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

Image

CCAC was really a drag especially with the other things I was struggling with at that time.  Slippery Rock has been my escape really and has helped me move past some bad memories.  I am currently a Communication Major studying Public Relations.  My first semester here I managed to get a 3.5 GPA and that required a lot of hard work, I’ve never studied harder in my life.  I had a professor who went by Dr. Laux and he in all honesty changed the way I view academics and even certain aspects of life.  In all the classes I’ve taken throughout my lifetime I’ve never learned more than I did from just a few meetings with Dr, James Laux and I will always be grateful for the life lessons and the knowledge I have gained from him.

During the summer before I came to Slippery Rock a couple buddies of mine, Dave and Brendan, encouraged me to start working out.  Ever since I have been working out five days a week and it’s been ten months and boy do I feel better than ever.  I have improved significantly and have gone from the skinny video gamer to an fit and active athlete(This does not mean I don’t play video games because I still do quite a bit haha).  When I started working out in May 2013 I weighed in at 144 pounds and today I am almost 180 pounds.  I never though I would be this motivated but now I can’t miss a day of working out.  Just a year ago if you asked me to work out I may have laughed and walked away but thanks to Dave I am much healthier and physically fit, so if you are like me a year ago take this advice, GO WORK OUT!(You won’t regret it)  Becoming more physically fit made me want to get involved in some athletics so I decided to join the Club Volleyball team here at SRU and this was another great idea and I have had so much fun playing on this team.  Last fall we managed to win the championship at two different tournaments, one in Case Western and the other at our home tournament.  We also made the championship at two other tournaments but fell short in the championship games.

Here we are after winning our first tournament in Case Western:

Image

It was a really exciting win because SRU Club Volleyball hadn’t won a tournament in over five years.  We have a great group of guys on this team and we work and play well together.  Our season starts in two weeks here and I’m excited to see how we can progress and hopefully make our way to the top and we are even hoping to turn into an NCAA team when possible.

Since being here at Slippery Rock I have met many great friends and it has just been a great experience.  Here are some more pictures to sum up what’s been going on in my life since I last posted.

Steelers vs, Browns: Dec 29, 2013

20-7 Steelers, this was almost a miracle day for the Steelers…but KC ruined it.

In January I was able to do a full tour of PNC Park and it was a great experience because I am a die hard Pirates fan…

View from the press box:

Near Christmas time the Krew got together for a Christmas party.  John surprised everyone coming back from the Marines and even bought us all presents.  It was an awesome night for all of us to reunite.  We are doing different things in life now but we can always get together as if it’s still the days where we would just sit on the porch for hours and hours talking about everything or anything.  That’s why I love these guys.

Image

And last but not least this is my current highscore on Flappy Bird, an  extremely simple and stupid game that I still find myself playing till three in the morning.  (Hopefully by the time you are reading this I have trumped this score)

Image

Well, I believe I have caught you up on my life for the most part.  There is a lot more I could say but it is four in the morning and I must rest!  More blogging is to come.  If you happened to have read all the way to this point, you must really like me.  Or you were just really bored, either way thanks for doing so!

That’s all for now,

Nostalgia.

A Different Perspective.

Nostalgia has to be one of the most intricate yet simple feelings. One simple reminder of a time and place that you once existed in can cause so much emotion to rush through you and bring back all these memories and ideas you had almost forgotten. Yearning is a perfect to describe how a moment like that can feel. An intense or overpowering desire to be in that existence one again. But does nostalgia only deal with the past?

One of my favorite artists is Justin Vernon also known as Bon Iver. His music is just so complex and to me and it is incredibly pieced together, the vocals, the instruments, the effects. Everything just comes together. But there is something different about Bon Iver, his music is not just pleasant to the ear, it is pleasant to the soul. I become lost when listening to some of his music and the only way I’ve thought to describe this feeling is nostalgia for a time and place that I have not existed in yet. It’s a hard concept to grasp but when you really think about it, it makes sense. The words and the notes being used in this kind of music take me away to a place in my mind that I have never been and I begin to have a longing and a desire for that certain place or time, but this is a place I have never ventured to before, so how can I yearn to go back to that place and time? Well nostalgia is sentimental, meaning it relies on emotion rather than reason. So all these built up emotions for that place that I emotionally created through the music can cause me to feel that nostalgia like feeling. I could imagine that someone who has not experienced this feeling to the full extent may not understand what I am getting at here, but to me it is a thought that returns to my mind often and I wanted to share it with you, maybe I’m not the only one.

That’s my daily thought. Thanks for reading.

Worthless

Worthless is probably the perfect word to use when describing drama.  Drama IS worthless.  I listen to people in school just ramble on and on…and on about all the drama in their life and how things are going wrong.  Don’t acknowledge the drama and it won’t affect you!  I don’t know what it is but something inside of us just wants to know all the wrong things people have done.  Maybe it’s to make us feel better about our own mistakes?  But either way, it’s just plain stupid.  I wont lie, I have been involved in my fair share of drama.  But, I quickly take notice to the worthlessness of it all and stray from it.  Well, this isn’t quite my complete thought but I must head to work.

P.S. – For all the girls reading this, a girl who likes to gossip a lot and take part in drama is a turn off in my book.  Just saying..

Things that don’t make sense.

A lot of the time I wonder why a lot of things just don’t make sense.. here are ten of them:

– We say LOL all the time but my guess is that 90% of the time we do not truly “Laugh Out Loud.”

– The economy is so bad and we control it.

– People die due to basic needs not being met.

– High School starts an hour before elementary.

– How little things can ruin a strong friendship.

– Dating in high school haha

– Animal Rights Activists

–  How singing always sounds better in the shower.

– How High School has so much unnecessary drama.

– How fast food is legal but marijuana isn’t.

Well here are some random thoughts of mine.

– Something can not be more perfect than an0ther thing considering the definiton of perfect is flawless.

– There will always be more.

– The success of Twitter is equal to the success of a childrens book.  Both of them took 20 minutes to make and became a huge success.

– 95% of songs are written about love and sex.

– You are your biggest critic.

– The field mouse is quick but the owl hunts at night.

– Sometimes saying sorry can seem like more of an insult.

– Forgetting about ourselves every once and a while could save the world.

– The ability to see is nothing without the ability to believe.

– Pain does not exist if you don’t accept it.

– Reggae music is pretty freakin sweet.

– I have an obsession with breadsticks.

– The milk always seems to run out before the cookie..

– Pronouncing words the way they are supposed to be pronounced is lame.

Silence…

As you may have noticed, I have not posted recently due to the fact that I am really busy.  But don’t fret, I have not forgotten about my blog.

Tennis just started and we have been practicing everyday till 5:30.  Also, we have been loaded with research in English class.  I just haven’t had much time, but anyways…to the blog…

Silence:

Silence is something we will never truly find.  No matter what there will always be sound.  Even if you can’t hear anything, sound waves are still there.  One day I would like to experience TRUE silence.  I wonder what it would be like.  I believe it would be incredibly peaceful.  The most peace I have ever been in was while sitting on the beach in the middle of the night..nothing is better.  The sounds of everyday life causes us stress and that’s what makes me wonder what experiencing complete and total silence would be like.

The Truth Revealed

Imagine this:

For one hour on one day everyone in the world was uncapable of telling lies.  For one whole hour everyone would have to say the truth.  I wonder how much this would impact our world.  I mean it’s obvious that the government hides so much from us and if they told us the truth what would happen?

In my opinion this would completely and quickly corrupt the world.  People would be so outraged and surprised from things they hear.  It would just be chaos for years after!  Imagine how many cheaters and liars would be caught, how many people would be found innocent for crimes, how many celebrities would become nobodies, all because the truth was told.

I could be wrong but I doubt it.  If you differ in opinion comment and let me know. Thanks.

Songs That Mean a Lot to Me

Well I was reading my friend Sarah’s blog and she took some of her favorite songs and explained why she loved these songs.  I decided to steal her idea and do the same exact thing.  So I give some credit to Sarah for this!

Ok well I went through some of my favorite songs over the years and I came up with two that have a lot of meaning to me.  Although my interpretation of the meanings behind these songs may not be correct, only the writer knows the true meaning.  The two songs I picked are Walk On by U2 and Say by John Mayer.  I’ll start with Walk On.  I don’t know if you have ever heard this song but it is such an inspirational song and gets me thinking everytime I listen to it.  This song is all about not letting things get you down and just continuing on with life no matter what.  One of my favorite lines in the song is “And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
You can only take so much

Walk on”

This line is saying that sometimes we will be heart broken and the only thing we can do is walk on!  Just keep going no matter what, don’t dwell on the past.  I also think this song speaks of Heaven:

“And love
Is not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can’t leave behind”

I think he is talking about going to Heaven because love is the only thing that can be brought to heaven – It’s all that you can’t leave behind.

“You’re packing a suitcase for a place
None of us has been
A place that has to be believed
To be seen”

The only way to ever see heaven is to believe in God’s plan for us.  So yah, thats my interpretation of Walk On by U2.

Now I want to give you my interpretation of John Mayers hit song Say.  I think this is how most people would interpret the song but either way it is an amazing song.

“It’s better to say to much, than to never say what you need to say”

Mayer is trying to say that we can’t live our lives hiding all of our ideas and emotion in our head.  We need to open up to the world, to our friends, to our family and say what we have to say.  We can’t keep all of our emotions and thoughts locked up, what good is that?

“Even if your hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Even as the eyes are closing
Do it with a heart wide open”

Sure, everyone gets nervous about telling people what they TRULY think and believe.  But never telling anyone isn’t going to help.  Also, make sure you say it with a heart wide open.

So there you go.  Those are two of my favorite songs and two songs that have a lot of meaning to me.  I hope you took something from this!

Random

This just going to be a quick blog about random things I would like to say.

I know all of you are aware of the Holocaust.  We look back at this horrific point in history and wonder how anyone could ever kill that many people.  The only question anyone has is “WHY?”   I began to think.  Why don’t we consider the first American Settlers dictators.  We came to the land of the natives and we killed them.  We killed all of them because we felt that they didn’t belong.  Was that justified? Was that any better than what hitler did? There really is no justified reason to murder someone.  Everyone has a purpose on this earth.

People who call themselves pro-choice are actually quite the opposite.  When you give a mother the choice to abort her child you are taking away the chance of someone ever having a choice.

Curling is the sport of the century. I just wanted you to know that.

Leave Tiger Woods alone.  More than 70% of people who make it that big are screwed up and have two lives. Most of them just don’t get caught.

________________________________

FarmVille and Call of Duty. I play both of these games and a lot of people have this idea in their heads that FarmVille is a wase of time and that Call of Duty isn’t.  I just want clarify that playing both of these games is an equal waste of time.  Not going to lie, I love these games but saying one game is more of a waste of time then another is foolish.
